Six Held in Britain on Suspicion of Terrorism Offences

Six people have been arrested in Britain on suspicion of terrorism offences, London's Metropolitan Police said Thursday.

The five men and one woman were detained in London on Thursday "on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism," the force said in a statement.

Police stressed that the arrests were not related to the London Olympic Games, which get under way on July 27.

The men arrested are aged between 18 and 29 and the woman is aged 30. One man aged 24 was shot with a Taser stun gun during the arrest but did not need to go to hospital, the police said.

Searches are still being carried out at eight addresses in London.

Scotland Yard declined to give more details on the case but British media reported, without quoting sources, that the arrests related to a possible plot involving Islamist extremists with potential targets in Britain.

The threat posed by the alleged plot was not thought to be imminent. Some of those arrested are reported to be British nationals.
