The Jal el-Dib highway was open to traffic on Tuesday as the residents of the area called off their protest after the cabinet decided to build a tunnel to replace the dismantled bridge.
The residents of Jal el-Dib were set to block the highway from 7:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday to protest the cabinet’s failure to find a solution to replace the old metal bridge.
The cabinet approved on Monday a plan to construct a tunnel in the area and tasked the Council of Development and Reconstruction with preparing the engineering studies.
The government also decided to swiftly issue the tenders and task an international consultant to set a primary study on the cost and the time of execution.
In February, the bridge was dismantled after warnings that the structure could collapse.
The cabinet’s failure to find a replacement for the bridge sparked anger among the residents of the area.
