Cross-Border Fire, Shelling on Akkar Border Town

North Lebanon's border with Syria was hit on Monday night by cross-border shelling following an exchange of gunfire, a security official told Agence France Presse.

This is the latest of a series of border incidents in recent weeks.

"There was an exchange of cross-border gunfire between the (Lebanese village of Akkar district) Dababiyeh and Halat (in Syria)," said the official.

"The sound of shelling was also heard in Dababiyeh," he added. Dababiyeh is 50 kilometers north of the coastal city of Tripoli.

He did not elaborate on casualties or on the sources of the violence.

"Several homes were damaged in the violence, including my own," Dababiyeh's municipal chief George Abdullah told AFP.

The latest incident came just a week after Syrian regime forces fired shells into Lebanon, and nine days after cross-border violence killed two girls and wounded several people in north Lebanon.
