March 14 Says Support for Army Indisputable, Slams Aoun

March 14 alliance’s general-secretariat coordinator Fares Soaid accused Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun of staging Monday’s protests in Sarba to compensate the public loss in the northern Koura district by-elections.

“Several political parties led by the FPM are trying to show that there is a sect that supports the army and another that doesn’t… A sect with the oppressor and another with the oppressed,” Soaid told An Nahar newspaper on Tuesday.

The March 14 official called on Army Commander General Jean Qahwaji to beware of the attempts to involve the military institution in a dangerous approach.

On Monday, several “army supporters” blocked Sarba highway in both directions to protest the re-detention of the three officers who were arrested in the killing of Sheikh Ahmed Abdul Wahed and his companion Mohammed Merheb.

Protesters demanded the immediate release of the officers.

“The moving protests on Monday night must have been supported by some security agencies affiliated with the military institution,” Soaid said.

“This is very dangerous,” he told the daily.

Soaid demanded the army leadership not to allow “those who are politically bankrupted” of using the army as a cover for their loss.

“The March 14 forces support the Lebanese army, the legitimate institutions and the state… The security chaos is fabricated and foreshadows a dangerous sedition endeavors in the country,” he added.

On Saturday, the military magistrate issued arrest warrants against the three army officers, who were previously released, in the case of the killing of the Sunni Sheikhs at Akkar district’s Kweikhat army checkpoint in May.
