Dar al-Fatwa accused Free Patriotic Movement leader Michel Aoun on Thursday of killing Sunni Sheikh Ahmed Abdul Wahed twice by claiming he was carrying liquor bottles in his car when he was shot at an army checkpoint in the northern district of Akkar in May.
“Aoun should apologize for publicly insulting Muslims and Ulemas in particular,” Dar al-Fatwa said in a statement.
On Tuesday, Aoun wondered what was found in the car of Abdul Wahed and his companion Sheikh Mohammed Merheb when they were killed at al-Kweikhat checkpoint.
“We heard that it contained alcoholic beverages,” he said.
“Does Aoun want to slander martyred Sheikh Abdul Wahed and kill him once again by tarnishing his reputation after his murder?” the Dar al-Fatwa asked in its statement.
Describing the sheikh as an “honorable Ulema,” it said: “We won’t allow anyone to insult him and slander him particularly after his killing and martyrdom (in an attempt) to picture him as corrupt Ulema.”
