EDL to Suspend Work after Attack on Financial Affairs Office as Bassil Questions Judiciary’s Inaction

Electricite du Liban announced on Tuesday that a number of employees stormed the office of the financial affairs director at the company, threatening her and forcing her to leave the building after she feared for her safety.

Energy Minister Jebran Bassil meanwhile slammed the development, wondering why the judiciary has not yet “performed its duties” in tackling this issue.

EDL said in a statement that the attack against the office does not only harm the director, but all of the employees at the state-run company.

It announced that it will suspend its work on Wednesday in a show of solidarity with the director and in condemnation of the attack.

Furthermore, it said that it will call on the financial affairs director to file charges against anyone involved in the incident.

Work will be suspended in all sections of the company except the power production sector and the main power plants.

For his part, Bassil accused after the Change and Reform bloc’s weekly meeting the judiciary of not protecting the employees at EDL.

He added that the Internal Security Forces have also not thwarted any threat against them.

The minister hoped that the employees would exercise restraint and express themselves in a civilized manner.

“All of their demands and ours will be fulfilled,” he stressed.

EDL contract employees have been staging a protest at the company over the failure to pay their salaries and grant them full-time employment.
