Syrian renewed on Sunday its demand to Lebanon to prevent the infiltration of “terrorist groups” from its territories into its own.
Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem stated: “We hope Lebanon would help thwart the infiltration, which will benefit it and Syria.”
He made his remarks after holding talks on the Syrian crisis with his Iranian counterpart Ali Akbar Salehi in Tehran.
Muallem added: “We are keen on Lebanon’s stability.”
The minister made his statements on Lebanon when asked by a reporter if Syria will activate its military cooperation agreement with Iran should it be attacked by international powers.
He responded that Syria has the sufficient capabilities to defend itself.
He then went on to discuss Lebanon to which the reporter clarified that he had not asked about Lebanon, but Iran.
Muallem replied: “Syria has sufficient capabilities to defend itself, whether you are talking about Iran or Lebanon.”
Meanwhile, Syrian television reported on Sunday morning that authorities had made direct hits against “terrorist gangs” attempting to enter Syria’s Tall Kalakh region from Lebanon.
