Head of the Palestinian Armed Struggle Col. Mahmoud Issa has warned that some members of the now defunct Fatah al-Islam militant network are trying to regroup to carry out “suspicious operations.”
In remarks to pan-Arab daily Asharq al-Awsat on Saturday, Issa, who goes by the nom de guerre of al-Lino said that “some parties that have an interest in targeting the security of camps and its vicinities stand behind these operations and attempts to revive Fatah al-Islam.”
He stressed that Fatah al-Islam leader Osama al-Shehabi seems to have received orders to revive the terrorist group.
But Issa vowed to “strike with iron fist” the militants. “We enjoy a factional and popular support and we won’t allow these groups to breath.”
Well-informed sources in the camp told the newspaper that a series of security incidents have shaken the situation in Ain el-Hilweh. They said militants are tossing hand grenades and planting explosives in several areas.
The latest target was Fatah member Ayman al-Dajjani who escaped an assassination attempt, they said.
The sources unveiled that “security incidents reached their climax” when Fatah guards confronted an armed group of around six members, believed to be Fatah al-Islam gunmen, after three explosions shook the camp’s eastern side followed by heavy gunfire.
