Sami Gemayel Rejects Electoral Law, Says Won't Pass in Parliament
MP Sami Gemayel, Phalange Party’s Central Committee Coordinator, on Wednesday voiced rejection of the draft electoral law adopted by the cabinet, saying it was tailored to serve the electoral interests of the ruling coalition and stressing that “it will not pass in parliament.”
“We were clear in the Bkirki committee and we were working on two laws: the first, which we favor, was a law based on small electorates comprising two to three MPs, and we were putting the final touches, and the second option was the choice of proportional representation but with electorates other than those proposed by cabinet,” Gemayel said in an interview with MTV.
Therefore, “we reject the law issued yesterday,” added Gemayel.
The cabinet on Tuesday approved an electoral law based on proportional representation and 13 electorates.
Gemayel rejected remarks that the Phalange Party and the Lebanese Forces will be obliged to stand by their ally Mustaqbal Movement in rejecting the law although it serves their interests, noting that “Mustaqbal Movement has interests in other electorates, but not in Metn and Baabda, nor in Byblos, Keserwan and Beirut, particularly its first district, because the problem is with us.”
The lawmaker called on the Free Patriotic Movement to “shoulder its responsibilities concerning what we agreed on in the Bkirki committee, as it cannot disregard what we worked on for six months as if it never happened.”
“There must be credibility and efforts,” added Gemayel.
