Former Foreign Minister Fawzi Salloukh has reportedly told ex-U.S. Ambassador Jeffrey Feltman that he was ready to mediate between the diplomat and Hizbullah.
However, Feltman rejected the offer saying “we don’t send messages to Hizbullah” which the U.S. considers a terrorist organization.
According to a WikiLeaks cable published by al-Akhbar daily on Thursday, Salloukh told Feltman during a meeting they held on September 27, 2005 that some Lebanese Shiites had a misconception that U.S. policies towards Shiites were “hostile.”
The former minister expressed readiness to help Shiite Lebanese understand Washington’s policies.
“They need to see that the U.S. won’t seek to isolate them as a sect,” Salloukh reportedly told Feltman.
