Ghosn Warns Tripoli Fighting Could Spiral out of Control

Defense Minister Fayez Ghosn warned on Thursday that the deadly gunbattles among the residents of the northern city of Tripoli could spill over to other areas in Lebanon.

In remarks to Voice of Lebanon radio (93.3), Ghosn said: “The continued fighting in Tripoli could affect the entire country.”

“The army hasn’t backed off or changed the course of its presence in its bases in Tripoli,” he said.

It “is seeking to control the situation based on the facilities made available,” Ghosn added.

Severe gunbattles between the two rival neighborhoods of Jabal Mohsen and Bab al-Tabbaneh since Monday have left scores of casualties, including army troops.

Ghosn called on Tripoli’s personalities to take effective measures to help the army restore order “because all sides, despite the differences in their viewpoints, reject fighting and blood.”

“Everyone should assume his responsibility,” the minister said.
