U.N. Special Coordinator for Lebanon Michael Williams hoped on Monday that a new government would be formed in a few weeks’ time in order for it to tackle the recent security unrest in the country, among other matters.
He said after holding talks with Caretaker Interior Minister Ziad Baroud that this issue should be at Lebanese politicians’ main concern.
He also commended Baroud for his ministry’s efforts in tackling the recent instability in Lebanon in the Roumieh prison riots and kidnapping of the seven Estonian cyclists.
The U.N. official also quoted the minister as saying that the situation in Roumieh is calm and stable, adding that Baroud is overseeing reform that would be implemented at the jail.
Williams also voiced his interest in the fact that 70 percent of inmates had not been tried, calling for reforms and voicing the United Nations’ readiness to help in this matter.
