President Michel Suleiman met with Syrian Prime Minister Wael Nader al-Halqi and Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem on the sidelines of the Non-Aligned Movement summit in Tehran last week, al-Akhbar newspaper reported on Friday.
The daily said that the Syrian officials gave explanations to Suleiman on the case of former Minister Michel Samaha who was arrested last month on charges of plotting to carry out bombings in Lebanon with Syrian help.
Two other Syrian officers, National Security chief Brig. Gen. Ali Mamlouk and another senior general identified only by the first name of Adnan, have also been charged of plotting the terror attacks.
The meeting between Suleiman, al-Halqi and al-Muallem was “calm” and “comforting” for both sides, al-Akhbar quoted political sources as saying.
“Suleiman received the explanations that he was waiting for from Syria in ex-Minister Michel Samaha's case and what was said about the involvement of the Syrian officers in it,” the sources said.
Suleiman was in Tehran last week to attend a two-day Non-Aligned Movement summit during which representatives from 120 member countries adopted a document that condemned unilateral sanctions against Iran, backed the right of Tehran and other states to peaceful nuclear energy, and supported the creation of a Palestinian state.
