Syrian Officer among 8 Charged with Kidnapping Syrian Opposition Members in Lebanon

Military Tribunal Judge Saqr Saqr charged on Wednesday eight people, including a Syrian officer, with kidnapping Syrian opposition members in Tripoli in order to transport them back to their country.

Five of the suspects have already been arrested, while the rest remain at large.

The army had announced on Sunday that its intelligence had succeeded in uncovering a six-member criminal gang.

Three of them were arrested in Tripoli as they were attempting to abduct a Syrian opposition member.

LBCI television reported that the army had arrested three Lebanese nationals at a checkpoint on charges of kidnapping Syrian opposition member, Khaled Mustapha.

They had forced him into their car in order to hand him over to Syrian security officials, who had trained the kidnappers.

The gang leader is a resident of the Akkar town of Birqayel.

He was trained by Syrian intelligence and promised financial rewards for each successful abduction, said LBCI.

The report added that some journalists in the North had played a role in providing information to Syrian intelligence on Syrian opposition members in Lebanon.
