United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon Derek Plumbly visited on Thursday the Palestinian refugee camp of Bourj al-Barajneh in Beirut with representatives from the U.N. Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) to examine the humanitarian and living conditions in the camp, said his press office in a statement.
“The United Nations is committed to continue working to help improve the humanitarian and socio-economic conditions of the Palestinian refugees in Lebanon in full coordination with the Lebanese authorities,” he said.
It was Plumbly's first visit to the camp, one of 12 official refugee camps in Lebanon.
After visiting the UNRWA health center and shelters that are being rehabilitated with the support from donors, he met with representatives of the camp’s two popular committees.
The representatives of the committees briefed him on the living conditions of over 17,000 registered refugees in the camp and raised a number of concerns of the Palestinian refugee population in Lebanon, including in relations to the right to work.
“I am very grateful for the hospitality and generosity of the Palestinians I met here in Bourj al-Barajneh today,” Plumbly said during his tour of the camp.
He noted the difficulties facing its residents, but hailed the efforts of UNRWA to address some of the day-to-day challenges there.
The official stated that he looks forward to engaging further with UNRWA and with the Lebanese-Palestinian Dialogue Committee and the Lebanese government in that regard.
