The Army command said Thursday that the military arrested al-Meqdad clan's spokesman under the order of Gen. Jean Qahwaji during a “delicate” operation.
“Under the instruction of Army chief Gen. Jean Qahwaji, an intelligence unit was able to arrest Maher al-Meqdad during a delicate and swift operation in Beirut's southern suburbs that did not involve any shooting,” the military's communique said.
The suspect is being interrogated by the judiciary on the kidnapping spree of Syrian and Turkish nationals, it added.
The Army has so far seized at least 5 people involved in the kidnappings.
The Army freed on Tuesday the remaining four Syrians kidnapped by al-Meqdad clan during a raid in Beirut's southern suburbs. The clan later set free Turkish businessman Tekin Tufan.
The clan went on the abduction spree over the kidnapping of Hassan al-Meqdad in Damascus last month.
The Army has been raiding neighborhoods in Beirut's southern suburbs since last Friday.
