Interior Minister Marwan Charbel denied on Sunday that some political parties had given refuge to wanted suspects in Beirut's southern suburbs.
“It's not true that some parties in the suburbs gave refuge to some of the wanted” individuals, Charbel told a Kuwaiti newspaper.
The Internal Security Forces and the Army are concentrating in their raids on the area because several of the suspects are there, he said.
Charbel was referring to a series of raids carried out by the armed forces in several neighborhoods of Beirut's southern suburbs and elsewhere in Lebanon in search for mainly suspects wanted in the kidnappings spree that have been shaking Lebanon lately.
He reiterated that “the raids in the suburbs and other areas will continue until they achieve their full objectives.”
None of the wanted suspects in Lebanon enjoy political cover, Charbel told the daily, saying “they will be arrested sooner or later.”
The army seized on Saturday Hassan Karaki known as Antar a day after he opened fire on a military patrol and injured two officers and other soldiers.
Karaki is wanted on several arrest warrants for being involved in an organized crime and is deemed very dangerous, An Nahar daily said Sunday.
