Speaker Nabih Berri discussed with al-Mustaqbal parliamentary bloc head MP Fouad Saniora a wide range of issues including the electoral draft law and the social and economy situation.
Sources told An Nahar newspaper published on Tuesday this is the first meeting held between the two since the cabinet of ex-Prime Minister Saad Hariri was toppled in January 2011 by the March 8 alliance, in which Berri is a key player.
According to al-Liwaa newspaper, sources close to Saniora said that the meeting was to “bridge the gaps and break the ice” between the two officials.
“The meeting was positive,” the sources pointed out.
They noted that “disputes shouldn't have an impact on communication between officials to safeguard the country from any negative repercussions.”
The March 8 alliance and the March 14 camp are deeply divided over several issues among them the uprising against President Bashar Assad and Lebanon's electoral draft law.
Discussions between Berri and Saniora seek to maintain contacts amid the circumstances surrounding Lebanon and the region.
“We aim at preserving stability and protecting the civil peace despite the political disputes,” Saniora said in a statement issued by his press office.
