Israel Says Syrian Fire on Golan Accidental

A rocket and mortar rounds fired from Syria that hit the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights in recent days were not aimed at the Jewish state, an Israeli minister said on Thursday.

"The fire was the result of inter-Syrian fighting and we have no intention of getting involved in that issue," Regional Development Minister Silvan Shalom told Israeli public radio.

"It's serious and it shouldn't be happening, but this is what's going on and we are closely monitoring the situation," he said.

A rocket fired during clashes between Syrian government forces and rebels exploded on the Golan Heights on Wednesday without causing casualties, a day after mortar rounds from Syria hit the area.

Israel captured the Golan Heights from neighboring Syria in the 1967 Six-Day War and unilaterally annexed it in 1981.

More than 30,000 people have been killed in violence since the outbreak of the revolt against the rule of President Bashar Assad in March last year, according to Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
