Gemayel Meets Connelly: Lebanon’s Security and Unity Require us to Seriously Consider Positive Neutrality

Phalange Party leader Amin Gemayel stated on Thursday that the situation in the Arab world requires the Lebanese to exercise vigilance and take a responsible position towards these developments as they may have repercussions on the internal Lebanese scene.

He made his statements after holding talks with U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Maura Connelly.

He also warned of attempts to drag Lebanese politicians and parties into the Arab disputes, especially those in Syria.

“No one can benefit from interfering in these matters and we therefore call on Lebanon to exercise positive neutrality in addressing Arab, regional, and international developments,” Gemayel stressed.

“Why don’t we reach an agreement to distance Lebanon from these conflicts because if they were to spread to Lebanon, they would pave the way for a new war,” he noted.

Addressing the government formation process, he once again demanded the formation of a national salvation cabinet of partnership “that enables Lebanon to confront all dangers”.

Furthermore, Gemayel warned against getting embroiled in any conspiracy “that would once again involve us in internal disputes that we thought we had overcome.”

Connelly meanwhile left the meeting without issuing a statement.
