The transportation sector staged on Wednesday a strike to protest the soaring fuel prices and demand the cabinet to cap rising gasoline prices.
“We will hold on to our rights,” head of the Transportation Drivers Union Marwan Fayyad told protesters.
He pointed out that the union will escalate its measures if the cabinet failed to meet its demands.
The union is demanding a price cap for a LL25,000 ceiling on 20 liters of gasoline and LL20,000 on diesel.
The weekly update of fuel prices issued on Wednesday witnessed no change in gasoline prices, while the diesel prices dropped by LL100.
The price of 95-octane rated fuel now costs LL35,900, while the 98-octane rated fuel is selling at LL36,600.
The union of taxi drivers decided on Tuesday to stage a strike after discussions with Finance Minister Mohammed al-Safadi over ceiling gasoline prices reached a deadlock.
However, the protest was boycotted by taxi drivers association in the north that accused the union of having hidden political agendas.
