Army Begins Deployment in Bekaa to Execute Security Plan

The army began deploying in the Bekaa region on Wednesday as part of a security plan to combat lawlessness in the area, reported the National News Agency.

It said that the deployment began at 3:00 a.m. where soldiers began taking up positions at intersections and roads leading to towns.

They set up checkpoints at the entrances and exits of the town of Brital and deployed in the region of Hourtaala farther east.

In addition, it set up checkpoints in the outskirts of the Sharawinah town in the Baalbek province and spread its presence towards the center of the area.

This deployment was accompanied with raids in Dar al-Wasiaa and Sharwinah.

Speaker Nabih Berri stressed on Monday the importance of the security plan in order to end the security chaos in the Bekaa, which has been marred with instability and a series of kidnappings.

Increasing crime, thefts and abductions in the Bekaa have intensified in the past year, although the state institutions have launched a number of campaigns to combat the trend.

The army recently launched a crackdown on assailants in Beirut's southern suburbs and several other areas in an attempt to halt a kidnapping spree of several businessmen and numerous bank robberies.
