March 14 Calls on Lebanese to Attend Hasan Funeral en Mass in a 'Day of Anger'

The March 14 alliance urged on Saturday the people to heavily participate in Internal Security Forces Intelligence Bureau head Brigadier General Wissam al-Hasan's funeral.

The March 14 called for a “day of anger” against Hasan's assassination and Syrian meddling in Lebanon.

Hasan will be laid to rest on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in downtown Beirut alongside the grave of former prime minister Rafik Hariri.

“Tomorrow isn't a regular day. It's a day for all the Lebanese and martyrs,” al-Mustaqbal MP Nouhad al-Mashnouq who read the statement said.

The March 14 camp demanded the immediate resignation of the cabinet and Hizbullah to hand over the suspects in former PM Hariri's assassination.

General Hasan, killed on Friday in a car bombing, would be laid to rest in the mausoleum of Hariri, who was assassinated in 2005, Internal Security Forces chief Ashraf Rifi told al-Mustaqbal television earlier.

The funeral would take place following afternoon Muslim prayers at al-Amine mosque in downtown Beirut, near the mausoleum, Rifi said.

The March 14 also called on Arab League chief Nabil al-Arabi and U.N. Leader Ban Ki-moon to take “all the necessary measures to safeguard Lebanon and its people through a series of steps, in particular, the deployment of UNIFIL along the Lebanese-Syrian border under U.N. Security Council resolution 1701.”

Under Hasan, the ISF played a central role in the August arrest of Lebanon's former information minister Michel Samaha, who has close links to Damascus. He was charged with planning attacks to spark sectarian strife in Lebanon.

The agency was also deeply involved in seeking the arrest of those responsible for a host of attacks and assassinations between 2005 and 2008, starting with the Hariri assassination, for which Hasan blamed Damascus.

In October 2010, the Syrian courts issued arrest warrants against 33 Lebanese figures, including General Hasan, for perjury in the case of the Hariri assassination.
