Army's Efforts to Maintain Peace Prove State is Only Safe Haven for Lebanese, Says President

President Michel Suleiman voiced on Tuesday his support for the army's efforts to maintain peace and stability in Lebanon.

He said after meeting Defense Minister Fayez Ghosn: “The army's measures to preserve security have demonstrated that the state and all of its institutions are the only safe haven for all the Lebanese people.”

“The people have to once again thwart the schemes being devised against Lebanon,” he added.

“They should work together through dialogue and openness in order to make it through this difficult phase and prevent the repercussions of regional crises from spreading to Lebanon,” Suleiman stressed.

He added that the political authority in Lebanon supports the army's mission.

Clashes broke out on Sunday in some neighborhoods in Beirut and the northern city of Tripoli after the funeral of Internal Security Forces Intelligence Bureau chief Brigadier General Wissam al-Hasan.

The army has since intervened to contain the situation.

Hasan was killed in a car bomb in Beirut's Ashrafiyeh district on Friday.

The March 14-led opposition and Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat accused the Syrian regime of being behind the crime.

The opposition has since been demanding the resignation of the government, accusing it of covering up the crimes of the Syrian regime in Lebanon.
