A number of leading March 14 camp officials met at Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea's Maarab residence on Saturday in order to address the local and regional situation, revealed the daily An Nahar on Monday.
It said that the leaders tackled in depth the latest developments, especially in light of the assassination of Internal Security Forces Intelligence Bureau chief Brigadier General Wissam al-Hasan, and reached an agreement on the main measures that need to be taken during the next phase in Lebanon.
The meeting was attended by Phalange Party leader Amin Gemayel, Mustaqbal bloc leader MP Fouad Saniora, MPs Georges Adwan, Sami Gemayel, and Ahmed Fatfat, and former Premier Saad Hariri's advisor Mohammed Chatah.
Sources close to the March 14 camp told the daily that the attendees agreed “against taking a lenient approach with the killing machine that has been active in Lebanon since 2004.”
They also agreed against being lenient with those offering cover to the killing machine, added the sources.
“The opposition will impose a new approach in dealing with the government and its members,” they added.
“The March 14 officials agreed to tackle the core of the problem,” stressed the sources.
They reiterated their recent agreement to boycott any meeting attended by the government, including the national dialogue and parliament sessions, until it resigns.
The March 14-led opposition and Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat accused Syria of being behind the assassination of Hasan in a massive car bomb in Beirut's Ashrafiyeh district on October 19.
The opposition has since been demanding that the government, comprised of mainly pro-Syrian forces, to resign, saying that it is covering up for the crime.
The March 14 officials at the Maarab meeting stressed the need for the formation of a new neutral government “in order to save Lebanon from crime and instability,” reported An Nahar.
The outcome of Saturday's meeting will be revealed starting this week, said the sources.
