President Michel Suleiman ruled out on Friday the postponement of next year's parliamentary polls saying the rotation of power is the right path in democratic life.
In remarks to a delegation from the Loyalty to the Nation Movement, Suleiman said: “In no way the elections would be postponed because the rotation of power is the first path in the practice of democracy.”
He called for a modern electoral law that would represent all factions in Lebanon.
Parliament has yet to approve an election law as the countdown for the polls that are scheduled to be held in the spring of 2013 has already started.
The government adopted a law that divides Lebanon into 13 electoral districts and is based on proportionality.
The president reiterated that democratic changes in the Middle East should become an incentive for Lebanon to improve its democratic performance.
Suleiman also urged the civil society to intensity its campaigns towards openness and the consolidation of diversity that Lebanon is an example of.
