Charbel Vows to Arrest Gunmen, Urges Officials to Prioritize Security

Interior Minister Marwan Charbel vowed on Friday that the security forces and the army will detain any gunman on the streets.

“We will ban any appearance of gunmen,” Charbel said in comments to Voice of Lebanon radio (93.3).

The minister stressed that all Lebanese foes must seek consensus over security in Lebanon as it should be based on an agreement among them.

“If the Lebanese failed to agree then the security situation will remain in danger and might turn into chaos,” Charbel pointed out.

Asked about the fate of the upcoming 2013 parliamentary elections, he expressed hope that the parliament would swiftly decide which electoral law to adopt so that the interior ministry would be able to prepare for “flawless” and “democratic” polls.

The meetings of the joint parliamentary committees, tackling the matter, were suspended after Internal Security Forces Intelligence Bureau chief Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hasan was assassinated on October 19 due to death threats.

The cabinet adopted in August a law based on proportional representation and dividing Lebanon into 13 electoral districts.

Meanwhile, March 14 coalition's proposal suggested dividing Lebanon into 50 electoral districts and adopting popular majority, explaining that this would give a just representation for Lebanese Christians., while a plan suggested by Free Patriotic Movement chief Michel Aoun’s Change and Reform bloc allows every sect to elect its own MPs under a proportional representation system with Lebanon as a single district.
