March 14 Congratulates Palestine on U.N. Statehood Bid: Historic Step on the Path of Arab Spring

March 14 General-Secretariat congratulated on Friday Palestine on acquiring the status of a “non-member observer state” at the United Nations, calling this step a “historic victory conforming to the events of the Arab spring”.

"This proved that historical achievements can be reached through the cooperation of the legitimate authority in Palestine along with Arabic and international authorities,” the March 14 statement said.

The opposition coalition wished for an internal reconciliation to be achieved in Palestine, explaining that “it would accomplish the long-awaited dream of the tormented Palestinian people”.

Former Prime Minister Saad Hariri also released a statement felicitating the Palestinian people and authority on this “exceptional victory” at the U.N., adding that this “achievement would be a message to the international community to recognize the Palestinians' ambitions to have an independent state”.

The U.N. General Assembly on Thursday voted overwhelmingly to recognize Palestine as a non-member state, giving a major diplomatic triumph to President Mahmoud Abbas despite fierce opposition from the United States and Israel.

The 193-member assembly voted 138-9 with 41 abstentions for the resolution which enables the Palestinians to join U.N. agencies and sign international treaties.
