9 People Charged with Assaulting Policemen Over Illegal Construction

Government Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Saqr Saqr on Tuesday charged nine people with assaulting security forces while they were seeking to end building violations in Beirut’s southern suburbs.

The National News Agency said that Saqr charged the nine people, including one detainee, for confronting members of the Internal Security Forces and assaulting them while they were seeking to curb building violations in the area of Ouzai.

Also Tuesday, Military Examining Magistrate Imad al-Zain questioned a man arrested on charges of resisting security forces trying to demolish illegal buildings at an area near the airport road.

Security forces on Monday curbed five building violations near the Cite Sportive in Beirut and demolished a house on the airport road.

In the past month, a crackdown on illegal construction has sparked fury among residents. The campaign has led to the injury of several people, including policemen, and the death of three people.

The ISF has taken strong measures against the transportation of construction material to the south by spreading inspection checkpoints at the entrances of several areas in the suburbs of the city of Tyre, As Safir daily said.

The newspaper said that prices of such material have increased sharply. The ton of cement rose from around 120 dollars to more than 200.
