Deputy Speaker Farid Makari is planning to stay in France until next April over recent threats made against him, al-Liwaa newspaper reported on Thursday.
Al-Liwaa said that Makari, who is a member of the March 14 opposition alliance, “has decided not to return to Beirut at this stage.”
The daily quoted an informed parliamentary source as saying that his decision came following “threats.”
“So he decided to stay in France until April 2013,” the source added.
Several March 14 officials and MPs have received death threats through text messages and at least two have escaped assassination attempts.
Makari's alleged decision came as Tripoli Mufti Sheikh Malek al-Shaar announced on Wednesday that he will not be returning to Lebanon from a trip to Europe after receiving information that he could be the target of an assassination plot.
