Israeli border guards shot dead on Wednesday a Palestinian teenager armed with a fake pistol in the West Bank city of Hebron, a police spokeswoman said, adding that clashes broke out after the shooting.
"A young Palestinian man approached a post manned by border guards. One of them asked him for his identity card. The Palestinian attacked him, brandishing a gun that he aimed at the head of the border guard," the spokeswoman said.
"Another border guard who was nearby opened fire killing the Palestinian," she added.
The police spokeswoman said bomb disposal experts later discovered that the "pistol was a toy made of metal."
After the shooting clashes broke out in Hebron between Palestinian protesters and Israeli security forces, the spokeswoman said.
Palestinian sources named the gunman as Mohammed Ziad Sulaima, aged 16.
Witnesses confirmed that clashes broke out following his death when Palestinians threw stones at Israeli troops.
On Monday, Israeli troops killed a Palestinian who wielded an axe following a traffic accident in the northern West Bank, police said.
