President Michel Suleiman has voiced his disappointment with the failure of his initiatives that are aimed at persuading the various rival political parties to return to the national dialogue, reported the pan-Arab daily al-Hayat on Sunday.
It quoted his visitors as saying that he will likely propose alternate initiatives to persuade factions to return to the all-party talks.
They said that he is seeking to discuss the spread of arms in Lebanon, a defense strategy for the country, and the electoral law, as well as the ties between the pro- and anti-government factions.
“Communication between the Lebanese should not be severed,” he was quoted as saying.
“This assertion is pushing him to propose alternative initiatives,” explained Suleiman's visitors.
The next dialogue session is set for January 7, but the participation of all of its members is not guaranteed.
The March 14-led opposition announced its boycott of the dialogue and government-related activities in light of the assassination of Internal Security Forces Intelligence Bureau head Brigadier General Wissam al-Hasan on October 19.
He was killed in a massive car bomb in Beirut's Ashrafiyeh district.
The opposition and Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat accused the Syrian regime of being behind the crime.
The opposition has demanded the resignation of the government in wake of the murder, blaming the cabinet of covering up for the criminals.
