U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Jeffrey Feltman is expected to arrive in Beirut on Thursday on a one-day visit where he is set to hold talks with a number of high-ranking officials during the day, sources told Naharnet on Wednesday.
He is scheduled to later meet political officials over a dinner banquet at the U.S. Embassy.
A Western diplomat told al-Liwaa daily published Wednesday that the visit comes on the eve of a new U.S. initiative on the Middle East and the peace process.
His trip also comes amid three major developments: The turmoil in Syria and its implications on Lebanon, the demonstrations at Maroun al-Ras and the Israeli attack on protestors and the cabinet deadlock in Lebanon.
