The 10 Best Movies of 2012

Written by Anthony Sargon

The new year is officially here, so it's time to look back at some of the best movies of 2012. There were quite a lot of good films, which makes the task of narrowing them down to 10 pretty daunting.

10. The Cabin in the Woods

You will not be able to take any horror movie seriously after watching "The Cabin in the Woods". It deconstructs the genre to its bare bones, but does it in a way that's both witty and smart. A must watch for horror and non-horror fans alike.

9. The Dark Knight Rises

While not the perfect trilogy capper many were hoping for, "The Dark Knight Rises" is still a satisfying film. Bane is a memorable villain, and Bruce Wayne's story arc is wrapped up nicely, even if there are a few stumbles along the way.

8. The Amazing Spider-Man

What's considered an unnecessary movie by many, this writer considers a blessing. After "Spider-Man 3", something drastic needed to be done, and "The Amazing Spider-Man" does what it has to. The cast is great, the tone is darker, and it's ultimately a lot of fun.

7. Lincoln

This film earns its spot thanks to Daniel Day-Lewis's flawless performance as the big man himself, as well as Steven Spielberg's on point directing. The movie is never dull, an impressive feat considering that most of it involves politicians bickering.

6. Zero Dark Thirty

Kathryn Bigelow's latest is a raw and unfiltered look into the investigation and strike that killed Osama bin Laden. The film is confidently directed, and it's looking like it will do very well this awards season.

5. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

There was a lot going against "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey", but Peter Jackson thankfully pulled it off in brilliant fashion. The movie is great for fans of Tolkien's lore, and while some may find it too long, you shouldn't expect any less from Peter Jackson at this point.

4. Argo

Ben Affleck has done it again. After two great directorial efforts, this is his best work so far. Tense and uncompromising, "Argo" is a great political thriller that will have you at the edge of your seat the entire time.

3. Django Unchained

Quentin Tarantino's latest is another pleasure to watch. The writing and performances are very engrossing, and your eyes will be glued to the screen as a result. If there's any reason the Oscars should introduce a "Best Ensemble Performance" category, it's because of Tarantino movies.

2. Life of Pi

"Life of Pi" is one of the most visually impressive movies ever made, as well as a great example of how to use 3D to tell a story. It's Ang Lee's greatest work so far, and it succeeds on many levels.

1. The Avengers

This movie deserves the top spot for doing a lot of things right. It's the culmination of many years' work, and a dream come true for millions of geeks around the globe. It's fun, energetic, and extremely funny; it's the best film of 2012.
