No Mechanical Inspection over Government Failure to Renew Contract with Operating Firm

All branches for mechanical inspection of vehicles were closed on Tuesday over reports that the Lebanese government hasn't renewed the contract of the company operating the facilities.

Voice of Lebanon radio (93.3) described the closure as a scandal after the contract of the firm “Fal” was not renewed and the government failed in finding alternative companies.

A phone call made to the Hadath vehicle inspection branch went unanswered.

A recorded message said the facility was “closed over maintenance work until further notice.”

The three other branches of Sidon, Tripoli and Zahle were also closed on Tuesday.

VDL quoted an interior ministry source as saying that Minister Marwan Charbel had previously proposed to the government the contract's renewal with improved conditions.

But the cabinet failed in taking any step in that regard after the company's contract expired at the end of 2012.

The yearly mechanical inspection checks whether vehicles can be put on the roads in conformity with technical standards and norms set by the interior ministry.
