U.S. President Barack Obama on Sunday accused Hizbullah of exercising "political assassination," as he condemned Iran's support for "extremists" in the region.
Speaking at the pro-Israel lobby AIPAC Policy Conference, Obama pointed to Iranian "hypocrisy" in "claiming to support the rights of protesters" in the region "while treating its own people with brutality."
"Moreover, Iran continues to support terrorism across the region, including providing weapons and funds to terrorist organizations. So we will continue to work to prevent these actions, and we will stand up to groups like Hizbullah, who exercise political assassination and seek to impose their will through rockets and car bombs," Obama added.
Iranian-backed Hizbullah is blacklisted as a "terrorist" group by Washington.
Obama stressed that "the commitment of the United States to the security of Israel is ironclad."
He also said Washington was going "beyond" regular military assistance to the Jewish state in order to help "maintain Israel's qualitative military edge."
