Berri, Miqati Express Full Solidarity with Army: It Enjoys Political Cover

Speaker Nabih Berri and Prime Minister Najib Miqati expressed on Monday solidarity with the army over the clashes in the eastern town of Arsal near the border with Syria, saying that it has the full political cover.

“What happened in Arsal is a crime against the whole nation,” Berri said in comments published in As Safir newspaper.

He pointed out that the incident is intolerable, calling on the judiciary to follow up the case till the end.

Two officers were killed on Friday in Arsal as the army was attempting to apprehend a wanted suspect, who was also killed in the clashes.

The speaker gave the army the green light to impose its authority across all the areas in Lebanon, saying “it doesn't need a permission to enter any specific area.”

For his part, the premier told As Safir that the army isn't favoring a side in Lebanon over the other or targeting anyone.

He hailed the army, pointing out that it is carrying out its tasks to maintain the interests of all the Lebanese.

Miqati said that the dispute over the role of the army should end, saying that the army has the needed political cover to do its tasks.
