Defense Minister Fayez Ghosn called on Monday on the Lebanese to be aware of the “delicate” stage the country is passing through and to let the army carry out its tasks for being “our only shelter.”
“The Lebanese should act responsibly with the (latest) developments, and shouldn't allow anyone to destabilize their faith in the nation and their army,” Ghosn said in comments published in As Safir newspaper.
He urged the Lebanese to express solidarity with the army in a “civilized” way and refrain from blocking roads and burning tires.
Ghosn said that the Lebanese “are demanded now more than ever to embrace the military and its leadership.”
The minister pointed out that “rumors will not affect the army and make it budge an inch on its national path.”
A recent deadly ambush on an army patrol in the Bekaa town of Arsal left Major Pierre Bashaalani and Adjutant Ibrahim Zahraman and Khaled Hmayyed, a suspect wanted on terrorism charges, dead.
The army has sealed off all the entrances to Arsal and brought in reinforcements as part of measures aimed at arresting more members of an armed group that targeted the patrol.
After the incident, protests were staged across several areas demanding the detention of the culprits and to express solidarity with the army. The demonstrators blocked roads with burning tires.
