If you thought 2012 had a lot of sequels, think again. There are about 31 sequels/prequels slated to come out this year, and while most of them are wholly unnecessary, these ten are the worst offenders.
10. The Smurfs 2
The original Smurfs movie was a lazy effort that only appealed to the youngest and least-demanding audience members. "The Smurfs 2" looks like more of the same, so if you were full after the first serving, you're going to want to pass.
9. The Last Exorcism: Part II
"The Last Exorcism" was a severely unentertaining found-footage horror film. It was marred by a lack of scares as well as an awful ending, and nothing sounds less appealing than a sequel to that mess.
8. Sin City: A Dame to Kill For
A movie that's about 6 years too late, "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For" is looking to reignite the fire started by 2005's sleeper hit, "Sin City". Robert Rodriguez has spent the last 8 years directing movies no one wanted to see, making this adaptation feel irrelevant and belated.
7. G.I. Joe: Retaliation
The first G.I. Joe was god-awful, and judging by the sequel's trailers, it looks like the studio hasn't learned anything from past mistakes. Casting The Rock and Bruce Willis is a clever move, but they'll do little to help what looks to be just another mindless action tent-pole.
6. The Hangover Part III
"The Hangover" was universally adored by audiences and critics alike. Part II didn't fare as well, and that's because the writers thought audiences wouldn't recognize the exact same plot points that were in the original. If that movie was any indication, we're in for more of the same when Part III hits.
5. 300: Rise of an Empire
Zack Snyder's "300" is one of the greatest (and most quotable) graphic novel adaptations of all time, which is why the idea of a prequel revolving around Xerxes is pretty baffling. This truly feels like a movie no one asked for, and without Gerard Butler's King Leonidas, it's hard to imagine anyone will care.
4. Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters
Why would there be a sequel to the first "Percy Jackson" when that movie failed to break-even at the box office? Sounds like no one wanted the property turned into a movie in the first place, let alone a franchise.
3. Grown Ups 2
Adam Sandler has historically avoided making sequels to his movies, which makes it all the more disappointing that his first one will be "Grown Ups 2", the follow-up to one of Sandler's unfunniest flicks.
2. Scary Movie 5
The third "Scary Movie" is actually one of this writer's guiltiest pleasures, but that still doesn't justify making a fifth entry in the series. "Scary Movie 4" was devoid of any laughs, and 2013's "A Haunted House" has already lampooned most recent horror flicks, so there's absolutely no need for "Scary Movie 5".
1. Paranormal Activity 5
The original "Paranormal Activity" made over $100 million at the domestic box office on a $15,000 budget. These movies are dirt cheap to produce, and as long as they keep making their money back, expect to see one every year for the foreseeable future.
