UNHCR: At Least 305,753 Syrian Refugees Currently in Lebanon

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said on Friday that at least 305,753 refugees have fled the warn-torn neighboring country and came to Lebanon since the start of the conflict in Syria.

The UNHCR's weekly report on the situation of refugees in Lebanon elaborated that the majority of Syrians and Palestinians reside in the north of Lebanon with their number reaching 112,384.

Meanwhile, 97,108 refugees are in the Bekaa, 51,283 are spread between Beirut and Mount Lebanon and 44,978 are currently living in the South.

U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres had said earlier this month that the number of people fleeing fighting in Syria could reach 1.1 million by June.

The international community needed to support a $1 billion plan, pushed by his and other international groups, to address the needs of those displaced by the Syrian conflict, he said.

The humanitarian situation in Syria is "the most dramatic crisis we are facing today," he said, adding developed nations, including those in Europe, needed to accept more refugees, as Turkey, Jordan, and Lebanon have done.
