Report: Saniora Met al-Rahi on Sunday, Discussed 'Ways Out of Election Crisis'

Head of the Mustaqbal bloc MP Fouad Saniora discussed on Sunday with Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi the latest developments on the Lebanese scene, particularly the proposed solutions for “a way out of the electoral law crisis”, radio Voice of Lebanon (100.5) reported on Monday.

"Saniora praised al-Rahi's wisdom in dealing with the current crisis and his commitment to higher national interest,” VDL said, elaborating that both men discussed the importance of religious coexistence in the country.

VDL noted: “Saniora also saluted President Michel Suleiman's national stands and his efforts towards applying the constitution and preserving coexistence”.

"We will work hard to renew Lebanese people's trust in the country's constitutional institutions,” Saniora expressed according to VDL.

The joint parliamentary committees on Tuesday approved the so-called Orthodox Gathering's electoral draft law amid opposition by a number of officials.

President Michel Suleiman, Prime Minister Najib Miqati, Jumblat's National Struggle Front, the Mustaqbal Movement, and independent Christian March 14 figures had rejected it, saying that it fuels sectarianism.

The proposal calls for dividing Lebanon into a single electoral district and allows each sect to vote for its own lawmakers under a proportional representation system.

Speaker Nabih Berri had stressed earlier on Monday that he will not call for a parliamentary session without previous consensus among the rival parties on the new electoral law.

“I run the sessions, I am one of the main elements of the national pact and I evaluate the interest of the country before I take any decision,” Berri said in comments published in As Safir newspaper.

The speaker pointed out that his duty prompted him to propose the hybrid electoral draft-law that combines the winner-takes-all and proportional representation systems.
