Interior Minister Marwan Charbel reiterated his warning on Friday that parliamentary elections would not be held on time if political differences among different factions remain.
In remarks to al-Joumhouria newspaper, Charbel said his warning stemmed from divisions among the different parties on an electoral draft-law.
“It's not that we don't have any laws and a constitution but there are political differences that could invade the laws and the constitution altogether,” he said.
An Nahar daily said Friday that Charbel is set to travel to Riyadh at the head of a delegation next week to attend the two-day meeting of Arab interior ministers.
It said Internal Security Forces leader Maj. Gen. Ashraf Rifi and several high-ranking security officers will accompany Charbel to the Saudi capital for the meeting that will be held on March 13-14.
Charbel is expected to meet several of his Arab counterparts on the sidelines of the summit to discuss bilateral cooperation, the newspaper said.
The minister said Wednesday that Lebanon should improve the capabilities of security forces to confront political instability.
He made his comment at a ceremony to lay the cornerstone for a new ISF training academy in Aramoun as part of a U.S. assistance plan.
