March 14 Delegation Continues Tour on GCC Diplomats, Stresses 'Special' Ties with Oman

A March 14 delegation held talks on Monday with the head of Oman's mission in Lebanon, Suleiman bin Hamad al-Alawi, as part of a tour to the Gulf countries' embassies to tackle concerns voiced by those states over the situation in Lebanon.

Al-Alawi informed the delegation that the Gulf countries are keen to preserve Lebanon's unity and stability.

The diplomat also stressed that the GCC states will always welcome the Lebanese expats on their territories.

Last week, the Gulf Cooperation Council expressed “great concern” over the government's failure to abide by the dissociation policy as declared in Baabda last year.

The Baabda Declaration was sponsored by President Michel Suleiman and calls for different parties to adhere to the disassociation policy to avoid the spread of the unrest in Syria to Lebanese territories.

The delegation, which included MPs Marwan Hamadeh, Fadi Karam and Jamal al-Jarrah, pointed out that Lebanon is keen to maintain the “special” and brotherly ties with the Gulf countries.

It also criticized the stances taken by Hizbullah and its allies over the situation in Syria, lashing out at Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour's recent stances at the Arab League.

“These statements harm the interests of Lebanon and Lebanese abroad,” the delegation noted.

Mansour called in his speech at the Arab Ministerial Council in Cairo last week for scrapping a decision to suspend the membership of Syria from the Arab League.

The minister's statement drew the rejection of several officials locally including Suleiman and Prime Minister Najib Miqati.
