Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun on Thursday warned that Lebanon is going through a period that is reminiscent of 1975, which witnessed the beginning of the country's 15-year-long civil war, but reassured that politicians have enough awareness to prevent a similar conflict.
“This period is very reminiscent of the 1975 period. The state is dissociating itself amid attacks on the army, but thanks God there is political awareness,” Aoun said.
“You are observing the scene in which some Takfiris (extremist Islamists) are operating, but we are containing the situation because we are strong. We are strong if they want us to resort to weapons, and we are strong in politics and strong through our rights,” Aoun added, addressing his supporters.
Turning to the issue of the electoral law, Aoun stressed: “No one will rob us of our rights anymore and we will regain our full rights.”
He accused al-Mustaqbal Movement and the Progressive Socialist Party of rejecting the Orthodox Gathering's draft law, under which each sect would elect its own MPs, “because they don't want any agreement in Lebanon, and this truly jeopardizes the Lebanese entity.”
“We will not allow any security or constitutional violations,” Aoun vowed.
“Only the Taef Accord stipulations that grant power to non-Christians were implemented, but Christian positions in power were robbed,” he added.
“There are no bribes in our pockets and no treason in our heads and there are no assassination crimes on our conscience. We are raising our heads up high, confronting and struggling,” Aoun went on to say.
