Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun announced on Friday his support for MP Tammam Salam's candidacy for the premiership.
He said: “We back Salam to head a cabinet of unity and stability.”
He made his remarks during a brief press conference after a meeting for the Change and Reform bloc.
Moreover, he added: “We will boycott the parliamentary consultations because we feel like it and not because we are taking a position against President Michel Suleiman.”
In the evening, at a dinner banquet organized by FPM's Engineers Committee, Aoun said: "There is a cabinet change and we want a government of national unity and understanding that can seriously exert efforts to preserve the country."
Slamming his rivals in Najib Miqati's cabinet, Aoun added: "They spoke of self-dissociation, but they dissociated themselves from people ... and the invasion of Syrian refugees happened until their number reached the one million figure."
"Syrian refugees are now consuming 800 megawatts of electricity and who can guarantee that they will not demand jobs in the future? Don't we have the Palestinian experience?" Aoun warned.
The binding parliamentary consultations are underway at the Baabda Palace.
They are aimed at reaching an agreement among parliamentary blocs over naming a candidate to head a new government.
They are set to conclude on Saturday.
The March 14 alliance, Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat, and Speaker Nabih Berri's Development and Liberation bloc have so far endorsed Salam's candidacy for the premiership.
