Aoun from Bkirki: We are Facilitating Cabinet Formation

Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun said Sunday that his party would facilitate the task of the premier-designate in forming a new government but warned against “political deception.”

“We are facilitating the cabinet formation process and we hope there would not be any sign of political deception,” Aoun said in Bkirki following a meeting with Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi.

His remarks came as Premier-designate Tammam Salam launches on Tuesday two-days of consultations with parliamentary blocs to discuss with them the type of the government and the division of portfolios.

Aoun said he exchanged with the patriarch viewpoints on the situation in Lebanon.

“I hope we could reach a national consensus government so that it carries out its tasks,” he said.

Aoun told reporters that his meeting with al-Rahi along with a delegation from his Change and Reform bloc was aimed at extending his greetings on the occasion of Easter and attending mass in Bkirki.

Salam said Saturday he would form a "national interest government" after 124 lawmakers in the 128-seat legislature voted in favor of his nomination.

Aoun boycotted the binding consultations at Baabda Palace but his bloc nominated Salam.

The National News Agency said al-Rahi telephoned Salam on Saturday night to wish him success. He also hoped for a swift cabinet formation.
