Suleiman Tasks Central Inspection Authority to Investigate Causes of Fatmagul Sultan Malfunctions

President Michel Suleiman tasked on Tuesday the Central Inspection Authority to investigate the causes of the malfunctions of the “Fatmagul Sultan” power-generating vessel.

He tasked the authority to uncover the circumstances that led to the malfunctions and determine the sides responsible for it.

Last week, nine out of 11 generators on the “Fatmagul Sultan” barge stopped functioning, leaving it working at 15 percent of its capacity, which is 27 megawatts.

According to As Safir newspaper, the vessel that began its work earlier in April suffered from several malfunctions caused by the long journey it took to sail to Lebanon.

It revealed that the ship never reached its capacity of production ever since it arrived to the country.

It expected that the vessel will completely stop functioning if the reason behind the malfunctioning was the fuel that was used.

In July 2012, Lebanon inked a $360 million three-year contract with Turkey's Karadeniz power company to lease electricity-generating vessels.

The two barges could generate 270 megawatts of electricity.

The second vessel is expected to arrive in June.
