The controversial issue of the new wage scale resurfaced on Friday a day after the Syndicate Coordination Committee threatened to resume its strike if the draft-law, which was approved by the cabinet in March, wasn't referred to the parliament.
Sources close to Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Miqati said in comments to As Safir newspaper that the “delay isn't intentional.”
The sources pointed out that the Finance Ministry was preparing to refer the new salary scale draft-law to the parliament but discovered several violations in the numbers that were included in it.
The Finance Ministry is correcting the mistakes that were made, the sources added.
Head of Public Secondary School Education Teachers Association Hanna Gharib vowed on Thursday that the SCC, a coalition of private and public school teachers and public sector employees, will resume its endeavors if the caretaker cabinet further procrastinated the referral of the draft law.
“We will paralyze the public sector,” Gharib said.
Gharib granted the caretaker cabinet 10-day period to refer the draft-law to the parliament.
In March, the Cabinet decided in a marathon session to refer the long-awaited salary scale to the parliament, which prompted the SCC to end its almost one-month long open-ended strike.
