Al-Mustaqbal parliamentary bloc on Tuesday stated that the weapons that were used against the Lebanese on May 7, 2008 are now being used against the Syrian people, urging the interference of the international community to stop Israel's attacks on Arab territories.
"Hizbullah has transformed into a tool that serves the Syrian regime and this is implicating Lebanon in battles it has nothing to do with and on the occasion of May 7, we condemn the party's former and continuous activities,” al-Mustaqbal bloc said in a released statement after the lawmakers' weekly meeting at the Center House.
Gunmen belonging to Hizbullah and its allies swept through Beirut’s neighborhoods on May 7, 2008 after the government of then PM Fouad Saniora tried to dismantle the group's telecommunications network.
The fighting that left scores dead brought the country to the brink of a new civil war.
The al-Mustaqbal statement elaborated: "The justifications given by Hizbullah to explain its involvement in Syria's war are not acceptable and the holy shrines it is claiming to protect belong to all Muslims and will always be protected by all the Lebanese.”
The bloc urged Hizbullah leader Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah to withdraw its fighters from Syria and held the party responsible for all the repercussions of its involvement in the neighboring country's conflict.
Nasrallah stated in April that he will not hesitate to help the Lebanese in Syria’s border town of al-Qusayr.
”We won't leave the Lebanese in Qusayr's countryside vulnerable to attacks and we will not hesitate to help them,” Nasrallah said explaining his party’s involvement in the Syrian conflict.
He also announced that Hizbullah fighters are defending holy places in the area: “Armed groups are only hundreds of meters away from the Sayyeda Zainab shrine and Takfirist groups launched clear threats on the Internet that they will destroy the shrine should they enter the area."
Commenting on the Israeli attacks on Syrian territories, the MPs said: “We condemn Israeli aggression regardless of the reasons the Jewish nation is giving to justify it.”
“Any attack on an Arab land is totally rejected.”
They called for an immediate meeting for the Arab League and an intervention by the U.N. Security Council to deter Israel.
They noted, however: “The Syrian regime is using its military arsenal to attack its own people but is helpless in front of Israeli violations.”
Israeli raids on Sunday hit three military sites outside Damascus, the second such reported attack in 48 hours, reportedly targeting weapons bound for Hizbullah which is an ally of President Bashar Assad's regime.
Al-Mustaqbal also condemned “the horrific Banias massacre committed by the criminal regime in Syria against its people.”
"This requires an immediate Arab and international move to stop the killing machine committing crimes against humanity in Syria,” the lawmakers said in the statement.
“What is happening in the neighboring country matches the crimes committed by Israeli Nazi and Fascist regimes.”
The statement elaborated rejecting the “unacceptable activities of sectarian cleansing that threaten Syria's unity and its role in the region.”
"We urge the Arab League and the United Nations Security Council to act and draw an end to these massacres,” it stressed, adding that those inciting and committing crimes must be penalized.
