Warrants Out for Suspects in Deadly Attack on Army in Arsal

Military Examining Magistrate Judge Imad al-Zein issued on Tuesday arrest warrants against two suspects involved in the killing of three Lebanese soldiers in the northeastern town of Arsal last month.

Al-Zein questioned Iman Shmaytiyeh and Ahmed Hussein Mohammed in the premeditated murder of the soldiers at a checkpoint in the area of Wadi Hmeid in Arsal on May 28, the state-run National News Agency reported.

Last week, State Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Saqr Saqr charged Shmaytiyeh and Mohammed in addition to a Syrian national, who is on the run.

The Syrian has been identified as Mashhour Abdul Mawla al-Rifahi al-Wazir.

The suspects face the death penalty if convicted.

The army said last week that its troops came under attack at the same checkpoint where the three soldiers were killed.

A clash ensued and two assailants were killed while the rest were able to escape, it said.
